Reflexive verbs

A reflexive verb is used when the subject does something to itself. Italian marks this with a reflexive pronoun. In the passato prossimo, reflexive verbs use essere.

The pronoun follows the subject

PresentPastEnglish
iomi lavomi sono lavato/aI wash, I washed
tuti laviti sei lavato/ayou wash, you washed
lui / leisi lavasi è lavato/ahe, she washes, washed
noici laviamoci siamo lavati/ewe wash, we washed
voivi lavatevi siete lavati/eyou all wash, washed
lorosi lavanosi sono lavati/ethey wash, they washed

Reflexive in Italian, plain in English

English gives no hint that these need a pronoun, so they have to be learned as reflexive.
